Welcome To Wilderness Orientation

UCSC’s Wilderness Orientation (WO) has proven time and again to be an invaluable experience for incoming college students. Throughout the trip participants are introduced to both wilderness travel and the approaching college environment; both within the context of a healthy group experience.

The beautiful, informal setting provides students with an excellent opportunity to form new friendships and discuss their hopes and fears for the upcoming University experience.

We have two trips to choose from:
1) A ten day backpacking excursion into California’s spectacular Sierra Nevada Mountains.

2) An eight day sea kayaking adventure in Tomalas Bay located in Pt. Reyes National Seashore.

Registration for WO is first come, first served. Feel free to contact the WO staff with any questions.

In 2014 the following sessions will be offered:

Backpack Session 1: August 31, 3pm. to September 10, 10 a.m.
Backpack Session 2: September 16, 3pm. to September 26, 10 a.m.

Sea Kayak and Service Session 1: August 31, 3pm to September 7th, 12pm
Sea Kayak and Service Session 2: September 16, 3pm to September 23rd, 12pm

For Session 1 students, we welcome you to arrive as early as 12 noon on Day 1 of your course. We will provide snacks and be able to meet and greet your fellow UCSC students. There are also great places to go to lunch on campus. Please be sure to arrive no later than 3pm on August 31st, as the course will officially begin at that time. For Session 2 students, it is necessary that you arrive between 12 noon and 2:30 pm in order to move your dorm and school supplies into our concrete storage facility, and course will officially begin at 3pm. After session 2 is over, your instructors will help you move all of your baggage into your dorm/ apartment on campus.

For those that are interested in a work project, we have a roof contractor you can reach out to for a job.
