THE PROGRAM
There are a growing number of opportunities in the field of natural
health care as more people discover the value of bodywork for increasing
self-awareness, rehabilitation and health maintenance. The Holistic Health
Program is designed to address concerns of the whole person including the
mind, body, spirit and environment. Our program respects and utilizes both
western scientific and eastern traditional approaches to health. As health
care continues to move in the direction of integrating both of these views,
we update and customize our program in response to the development in
the field. As a graduate of the Holistic Health Program you will have the
tools to meet your clients therapeutic needs from an integrated, whole per
son perspective.
The Holistic Health program was established by Donna C. Cerio in
1979. Since then we have created course offerings which lead to a Massage
Practitioner Certification (CMP). We strive to provide programs that meet
the interest of the UCSC community, and the developing national standards
of the profession. Our classes offer students the opportunity to learn and
develop technique as well as to initiate and nurture their own personal
growth, both as practitioners and as human beings. We emphasize honoring
personal rhythm and pace within a structure which accommodates students
needs. Our aim is to certify skilled, well-trained practitioners who embody
high professional standards.
HOW TO ENROLL
Everyone is welcome to take our classes. We also offer certification
to those interested. To receive certification as a Certified
Massage Practitioner a student must officially enroll by completing
the following steps in this order:
- Complete an enrollment form, which you can request from the
Holistic Health Program in the Recreation Office, East Field House,
831 459-2668.
- Submit your completed application with a non-refundable enrollment
fee made out to the UC Regents.
- Set up and attend an orientation appointment.
During your orientation you will receive a student handbook
which will assist you in completing the requirements of the
program. A file will be opened for you, and with the guidance of
your instructors, you will track your own progress and receive the
assistance necessary to move through the program smoothly.
MORE INFORMATION
Our program takes approximately two academic years. You
determine the actual length of time to complete.
As an alumni you are welcome to continue the program in case you
have not received certification by graduation.
We do not offer classes during the summer.
Upon successful completion of the
required classes, each student must demonstrate competency and integration
of the course requirements. This is ongoing throughout your
classes, and is completed in the Professional Practice requirement.
While specific requirements vary throughout the country, most states
require a certificate in order to become licensed to advertise and practice
massage and acupressure. Your certificate will satisfy this requirement in
most states, and is applicable toward the 1,000 hour requirement in
some states. Some areas require that you take a test which includes the
subject of anatomy. The anatomy courses in our program will prepare
you for most of these tests.
The Holistic Health Program is offered through the Recreation Office
and payment policy is the same as for all other recreation courses. For
information about class scheduling and registration, see the Department
Recreation Guide, published quarterly. We have a limited amount of
work/study available for students. This is separate from the University
work/study program.
The Holistic Health Program is approved by the National Certification
Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. We encourage students to
take the National Certification exam to complement their certification
from the program.
The Holistic Health program reserves the right to dismiss any student
for inappropriate behavior or unsatisfactory attendance.
