Need A Bike?
We have ten Kona bikes available to be checked out for free to students, staff, and faculty. Fifteen of the bikes are commuter, the Kona Dew, and the other five are burly 3-speed cruisers, Kona Afrika bike. The bikes come with a helmet, lock, and lights. You are responsible for your own safety while using the bike and you are also responsible for any damages or loss of the bicycle. Before you take the bike, there is a mandatory bike maintenance and safety workshop that will cover how to take care of the bike, fix a flat tire, how to use bike resources in Santa Cruz such as the bike trailer and bike co-op, and the safest ways to ride.
Bikes are available on a long or short term basis, depending on your need and the demand for bicycles.

Apply by email. Send a one page letter describing why you want to borrow a bike to scbikelibrary@gmail.com.

Where did the bikes come from?
The bike Library is part of the Student Environmental Center Transportation campaign which is currently concentrating on the most fun and effective transportation choice: the bicycle! It has been working on several long-term projects, including a class, a library, and an advocacy group.  The funding for this project came from the Campus Sustainability Council.

The bikes were built by students in The Culture and Community of the Bicycle (Oakes 42) in Spring 2008. The class is a 5-unit student directed comprised of three components including weekly lectures, community projects, and a mechanics lab where the students assembled the Konas. The bike kits were purchased using a grant from the Campus Sustainability Council.
