Mark McCarroll,  Head of Recreation

When people ask what Mark does at the Uiversivty, his response is that he's a "practitioner of leisure".  Mark McCarroll has worked in the Recreation office for over 21 years and has been Head of Recreation for the past 7 years.  He has also worked for Osprey Packs in Colorado and as a River Rafting Guide for 7 years.  Mark has a passion for organizing large special events for the community and when he's not working, you can finding him surfing or biking.    (831) 459-2668

 Matt Brower,  Senior Recreation Supervisor

Matt's role at the UCSC Recreation Department is to plan and coordinate most of the day and overnight wilderness trips.  He really enjoys providing unique opportunities for the students, staff, and faculty of UCSC to get off campus and interact in the natural world and with each other.  When not working, Matt surfs and snow boards with family and friends.

Skye Leone, Senior Recreation Supervisor 

Skye supervises the Surf, Kayak, Bike Maintenance, Climbing Wall, and Custom Trip programs through the Recreation Department. Skye has a long standing relationship with UCSC starting as an undergraduate student in the '70's. For many years he was associated with The Sierra Institute as instructor and director and particularly enjoys being around students. He has a M.A. in Natural Science and is a credentialed teacher. Skye like spending time with his wife and dogs & enjoys traveling, backpack & hiking, surfing, kayaking & biking, observing nature and studying Buddhism. (See Custom Trips for more details)

Kathy O'Hara Ferraro,  Senior Recreation Supervisor Kathy has worked at the Recreation Department for many years and is still very excited about her job.  Kathy coordinates the four film festivals, all of our Wilderness First Aid courses, most of our classes and workshops and a new puppy.  If that wasn't enough, she still finds time to run, bike and volunteer at her boys' schools. Greg Meyer, Leadership Instructor Greg is a UCSC alumnus and has a M.A. in Environmental Studies from Prescott College.  He has been a guide and naturalist for over 20 years and has led kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, snorkeling and adventure travel tours on 5 continents.  Greg is the supervisor in charge of the Outdoor Leadership certificate program and teaches a number of classes.  meyer@ucsc.edu

  Shelley Patton, Recreation Supervisor

Shelley is the director of the Holistic Health Program and brings 18 years experience in the Holistic Health field to the program. She is certified in Process Acupressure and is a  massage practitioner. Shelley graduated from Heartwood Institute as a Hypnotherapist and Addictions Counselor and maintains a private practice in Santa Cruz.
